How many times have you broken the glass on a picture frame you own and thrown it in the trash? Whether you have never done so, or its happened more times than you care to remember, theres a cute craft you can make from a picture frame with no glass. Its not expensive to make, it only takes a couple of minutes, and when youre finished youll have a new decor piece for your home. Its easy to make a one-of-a-kind treasure that can become a family heirloom when you start with a simple picture frame that has no glass or backing.
The item you display in the picture frame will be your choice, but whatever you choose, it must be able to dangle from the picture frame. Small novelties work well, tiny treasures, pieces of jewelry and some collectibles. The object of the craft is to find an item that can connect to a string - or something similar - and be dangled inside the picture frame.
Some picture frames, like thick, wooden frames, can stand alone. Most frames, though, will not stand after removing their backing. If the frame youre using wont stand alone youll need to create a stand. A wide piece of wood works well as a stand for most picture frames. Simply glue the frame to the new base and stand it up to create the finished look. Having the frame standing while youre connecting the dangling piece will make it easier to position it. At a craft store, or in a department store that has a craft department, youll find lots of things that can become the dangling item in your picture frame. Jewelry charms, for example, can be used to create your new decor piece. The charms come in many sizes and designs making them perfect for this craft. Thread the charm on a piece of fishing twine, to make a "floating" charm, or use decorative thread to display the charm. Each technique creates a different look. Tape or glue the twine to the top part of the back of the frame. Position the twine to where the charm dangles directly in the center of the frame. You dont necessarily have to go out and purchase a charm. If you own a necklace with a broken chain the charm from it can be used as the display piece in the frame. Even the jewelry isnt broken, but you no longer wear it, dangle the entire necklace, using the chain as the "twine" for the craft. Although a jewelry charm might be lovely in a small picture frame a larger frame will require a much bigger display piece. There are many different things that can be used to create the finished design. An old pocket watch, a stuffed animal, a belt buckle, a wooden shape, a large silk flower, a doll dress, or even another, smaller picture frame. Miniature frames often have a loop at the top that you can use to dangle the small frame inside the larger one. If you have an 8x10" frame or larger, and you dont have a stand or base, you can still create the craft using a frame that hangs on the wall. You will still remove the glass and the backing from the original frame. The wall will then become the backing for the dangling object. If you want, you can use the backing from the frame, and cover the cardboard with fabric, to create a background for the dangling novelty. When hanging the frame its necessary to hang it ever so slightly away from the wall to allow for the string or chain that is holding the dangling object. Set the picture frame display on a mantle, shelf or other flat surface. Or, create ones that hang on the wall of most any room. Theyre unique, inexpensive to create, and loads of fun. If youre looking for a fabulous craft that takes little time to make this is the perfect craft for you. If you dont have a useable frame for this craft check your local dollar-theme stores. They often carry a large assortment of frames that will work nicely for creating your new decor piece. Youll love it!
