Wooden Spoon Spring Flower Project for Kids

Ah, springtime! Fresh air, green leaves, flowers everywhere - what can be better? When winter seems to be disappearing, and spring seems to be nearing, many people get anxious to get outside. When its that time of the year where its still a little chilly out, but everything looks green and beautiful, a spring flower project can help you feel like winter is definitely gone! While there might not be any flowers blooming outside just yet you can still have vases full of beautiful flowers inside. Dont break out the potting soil just yet, though. Instead, go to the kitchen and grab some wooden spoons! Long-handled wooden spoons are ideal for making spring flowers that will liven up any room of your house. The kids will have a great time creating their own flowers, and afterwards, you can display them all in a vase. This isnt just a childs project, though. Adults, too, will have a blast making unique flowers from wooden spoons.

There are several different ways to make the wooden flowers which are colorful and easy. Start by making each of the spoon handles green. Paint the handles then stand the spoons upside-down in a cup to dry. Or, use green florist tape and simply wrap it around the spoon handles. When the handles are finished you can begin creating the fabulous flowers.

Make the flowers from things you have around the house or purchase a few cheap craft supplies to create the flowers. Wooden shapes are perfect for this craft. The shapes are sold in bags of various sizes and designs at any craft store. You can also purchase flower shapes already painted. Glue one flower shape on each spoon. Using a different shape for each spoon will create a bouquet of many different types of flowers. If youre using unpainted wooden shapes they can be painted, front and back, after theyve been glued to the spoon. Ordinary hot glue will help you easily attach the shapes to the spoons. After theyre painted and dried you can further embellish them. Add glue to the center of the shape then attach glitter, sequin, seed beads or other choices. Instead of using wooden shapes you can cut shapes from craft foam. The foam is sold by the sheet and comes in a huge variety of colors. Its not expensive and its very easy for children to cut. After youve cut the various flower shapes, and glued them onto the spoons, you can embellish as stated above. Create different looks by layering more than one shape, with each shape getting smaller and smaller. Similar to the craft shapes, paper shapes are easily cut by children. The shapes can be layered many times, since paper is so thin, to create a huge assortment of shapes, colors and sizes. When youve made all the flowers add your final embellishments to the centers. The embellishments you add can make all the difference to the finished look of the spoon flowers. Use buttons, fake jewels, marbles, or similar items to change the look of each flower. Youll find many things around the house - or at a craft store - that will help you create just the perfect bouquet for you. When youre all finished creating flowers stand them in a vase. So that all the flowers dont stand exactly the same height place a piece of Styrofoam in the bottom of the vase. Push some of the spoon handles all the way to the bottom of the vase but push some of them only partially into the Styrofoam. Tie a ribbon around the top of the vase or on each spoon. Add other things to the vase to create more appeal. Curl ribbon pieces, glue or tape them to wires, then push the wires into the Styrofoam. The ribbons can be littered throughout the vase. You can also glue small trinkets on wires and mix them in with the spoon flowers. The bouquets are perfect for just about any room of the house. Theyre beautiful, easy and will thrill your kids!
