Weve all done it: folded paper, back and forth accordion style, to create paper fans. Most of us loved fan folding as children but as adults? Sure! The fans were cute then and still are! But, this time well put a new spin on the paper-folding project and turn the fans into circles. When you do youll then have all sorts of decor items for your home. You wont believe how many unique and beautiful accents you can make for plants, walls and more.
So, you know the technique. Youll choose the decorative paper you want to use and begin folding it into a fan. Half-inch folds will create one look; inch-wide folds will create a completely different appearance. The difference will be in how thick the finished circle will be. Since its paper - very inexpensive - create many different sizes to see which ones you like best.
Papers that are printed on one side, like scrapbook paper, will give you a different outcome than papers printed on both sides, like newspaper. Of course, scrapbook paper is much thicker, so youll need layers of newspaper to create the fans. With scrapbook paper, youll just need one thickness. The stiffer the paper you use, the better the finished circles will be. One piece of paper is usually not enough to create the circles unless it happens to be an unusually long piece of paper. Fold a fan out of one piece of paper, then tape or glue the next piece on and continue folding. Or, fold several fans, then tape or glue them together. When the accordion is finally long enough youll be able to arrange the decorative paper circles. Lay the accordion of paper onto a flat surface. Take one end of the fan in one hand and the opposite end in the other hand. Bring the ends together, causing the accordion to spread out, and form a complete, flat circle. Tape or glue the ends together. These circles are colorful, easy to make and can be used in many different ways to decorate around the house. Make a large circle from thick paper and you can set a lightweight plant pot on it. The plant should be plastic or silk, as real ones weigh too much for the paper circles. Use scrapbook paper that has realistic rock or marble looks and youll create unique accents that make people do a double-take. The circles dont necessarily have to hold plants. Lay two or three fake or real roses on one for a special dinner occasion. Or, make one for the dining room table and place fake fruits on the circle. When you turn the accordion paper into a circle there will be an opening in the center. You can glue or tape a circle on the backside to close this hole. Glue a circle on the front and back, or just on the back. Attach a tassel in the center of the circles and hang them on closet doors or walls. The medallion-type accents are unusual and eye-catching. Make tiny ones to go around drawer pulls then simply remove them and throw them away when youre ready for a new look. Make really narrow pleats while youre folding the fans and create unique accents for a lampshade. Glue one or several circles to the shade. Make one large or several small circles. The final look is completely up to you. A painted wooden shape can be used to cover the hole in the center of the circle for a totally different design. Attach the circles to cornices, mirror corners, wicker baskets, and more. Make ones to go around the bottom of decorative candles (remove before burning), or just make one from foil and hang it from your rearview mirror. There are so many different ways to use the fan circles to add color and interest to your home. This circle craft is great for kids or adults. It costs little money and requires little time to decorate with fan circles. Make some today, change the look of any room with them, then stand back and be impressed with yourself!
